The Institute of Expressive Psychotherapy: Psychotherapies integrated with Art Therapy and Dance Movement Therapy, is a school for specializing in Psychotherapy recognized by MIUR (The Ministry of Education, University and Research, 23 July 2004, published on G.U n.180 of the 3rd August 2004). The entry requirements are a Bachelors Degree BA in Psychology or Medicine. It is based on psychodynamic theoretical models, with particular attention towards the theory of object relations and the specific contributions of D. Winnicott, S. Arieti, G. Benedetti, A. Robbins and J. Kestenberg on the role of creativity within the emotional development and therapeutic relationship. Such theoretical assumptions are integrated with Art and Dance Therapy's techniques and theories, which have been consolidated from clinical experience and confirmed by recent neuroscience developments. Expressive Psychotherapy practice is characterized by the use of artistic products, gestures and movement sequences and not only the use of verbal languages used between therapist and the patient during the therapeutic session. The practice of Expressive Psychotherapy is characterized by the patient's and the therapists' use of other non-verbal forms of communications, such as artistic products, gestures and movement sequences which are created during the course of the therapeutic session, potentially rich of meaning and significance. This therapeutic setting enriches communication within a preverbal code between patient and therapist thus enabling the integration process between psyche and soma experiences. At the end of the course, after the discussion of the dissertation thesis, the candidate is awarded the Diploma of Expressive Psychotherapist that can also be used for Psychotherapy Register membership.
